A few single keys reach the places you go most. They are a shortcut for people who want one, never the only way to do anything: every one of them has a button somewhere.
aopens Quick Addcopens the Calendardgoes to the Dashboard/jumps to Search?shows this listEsccloses any dialog
They listen only when you are not typing and no dialog is open, so a d typed into a Card name is just a letter. That is why Esc is the one that still works inside a dialog.
