Details

The lines on a Card, the kinds of information they hold, and why every value is kept.

A Detail is one line on a Card: Weight, Serial number, Last vet visit.

Name it, add a note if the name alone will not remind you later, then pick the kind of information it holds: words, a day, or a pick from your own list.

Making one

Detail Name * The name you will read a year from now. Short is better, as long as it still means something.

Detail Note (optional) A reminder to your future self about what belongs here. It follows the Detail everywhere its value is edited.

Add this Detail Commits the Detail to the Collection, and every Card in that Collection gains the line.

Every value a Detail has ever held is kept and dated. Entering a new value never overwrites the old one, so a Detail is a history rather than a slot.

The Functioning Preview

The preview under the Detail Type tabs is the real control, not a picture of one. It wears the name and note you have typed and changes the moment you switch tabs or tick a box, so you can see what you are making before you make it.

It also accepts a value. Started from a Card, whatever you type there is saved as that Card’s first value for the Detail. Started from a Collection, there is no one Card to save it to, so the value is yours to try and the setup is what gets kept.

Editing one

The name and the note are yours to change whenever they stop being clear, and every value the Detail has ever held survives the change. Renaming “Weight” to “Weight (kg)” rewrites the label, not the history.

The kind of information a Detail holds is settled when you add it, so that a column of dates cannot turn into something else underneath values you have already entered. A Detail of the wrong kind is best added again as the right one, alongside the first.

Recording a new value

Entering a value never overwrites the one before it. The new value becomes the current one and the old one keeps its place, with its date, in the Detail’s history.

A value can be dated. That is what makes a weight taken last month sit where it belongs rather than where you happened to type it.

The value history

The history is every value a Detail has held on one Card, newest first, and the top one is what the Card shows today.

Any entry can be edited or removed, including one entered years ago. Removing the current value promotes the next most recent, so the Card is never left with a blank where the answer used to be.
